Do You Think Clothes For Tall Women Are Pricey? Or Is It Me...
Let's go shopping! O.k., I admit it, I'm a little miffed with sticker shock, but here goes...
When it comes to buying clothes for tall women, the ever popular blue jeans can be the most difficult. If you don’t live near any big and tall clothing stores for women, then you may have to settle for a tall women’s clothing catalog, either by mail or online. The downside to ordering clothes for tall women is you can’t try them on first. A top is usually a safe bet, but tall women’s jeans leave too much to chance—whether in the waist, the hips, the inseam, or the number one concern of all tall women—the length. You have to ask yourself three things: - How adventuresome are you?
- Are you willing to trust online tall clothing stores?
- And just how badly do you need that pair of jeans?
They’re great casual wear, because they’re comfortable and sturdy. The challenge is finding a good fit so you also have a good look. I checked some of the online sites in search of jeans for tall women. The one that gave me the worst sticker shock would have to be Tall Couture. They don’t call it couture just because it sounds classy. They call it that because that’s exactly what it is. Their jeans for tall women all run between $140-200. Judging from the pictures, the legs are long enough to reach your feet and hide your socks, but the waistlines—well, except for a single pair of shorts, I didn’t see any of them reaching the waist. The higher the rise, the smaller the selection. They all seem to rest around the hips. I’d rather have jeans that are too loose or tight around the waist, than too loose or tight around the hips. The fit has to be perfect, or you will have—according to the description of their "Fidelity Belladonna Jean in Viper Rinse" which claims to prevent it—“embarrassing panty mishaps.” (Not sure I want to know what that entails.) If I’m going to pay that much money for a pair of jeans, I expect them to do more than just cover the lower half of my body—for instance, I think they should burn fat while I wear them (and without having to hook them up to a vacuum cleaner while I run in place). Or they have to make me look years younger. But if you’re a young and thin tall woman with an active, casual social life and lots of money to spend on clothes for tall women, Tall Couture could be the place for you. Then I came across a site called True Jeans with something called “My True Fit”—you can check boxes under a “style search”—waist, thigh, leg—to find the exact kind of jeans you want. So I went looking for My True Fit, checking all my preferences—high rise in the waist, relaxed in the thighs, flared in the legs (whether donning or doffing jeans, my big feet always move easier through flared legs). Either I’m extremely picky or a freak, because the results came back, “We are currently out of stock in your recommended styles.” I altered my preferences a bit—changing “relaxed” to “loose”—and got one result back. But the prices vary widely—from as high as $189.00 down to the $50-60 range. If you can find your own true fit here, then you might also be able to find something that fits your pocketbook. Finally, I found a website for plus size clothes for tall women, called Ulla Popken. The name sounds suspiciously Scandinavian to me, and while I tend to equate Scandinavian with high quality, I also tend to equate it with -- They May As Well Call It Couture. In this case, I was wrong. Not only are their jeans much more affordable, averaging around $60.00, give or take, but they seem to have something in the way of denim jeans for everyone, young, old, thin and not so thin. I especially liked their floral embroidered jeans and denim skirts. It’s hard enough to find just plain old jeans that fit—imagine being able to find tall long legged jeans with extra details like embroidery or lace, etc. I would go to Ulla Popken if they had a store in my area. As it is, I was intrigued enough to request their catalog. But no matter where I go to buy jeans, I still wish I could try them on first before buying. Even if a catalog or online store allows returns/refunds, it’s still a hassle. Our lives are so busy that we barely have time to try over and over again to find that holy grail of perfect fitting, affordable jeans. Why shouldn’t we be able to get it right the first time? What are your experiences with buying and trying on jeans? How far and wide did you have to search—or are you still looking?
